About Us
The appraisal of India's independent situation, particularly regarding the plight of traders, revealed several key issues affecting the trading community:
Key Issues Affecting Traders
- Trading activity was governed by numerous Acts, Bye-Laws, and Regulations enacted by Central and State Governments and Local Bodies.
- Some of the outdated laws from the British Government era continue to be enforced, despite changing realities.
- Complexity of laws makes them difficult to understand for average traders, especially self-employed traders with limited resources.
- Lack of strong lobbying efforts has made it challenging for traders to seek redress for their genuine grievances.
- The government has shown reluctance to recognize the critical role traders play in the economy, despite their contributions during crises and other philanthropic activities.
How CAIT was Formed
Inspired by the advice and vision of the late Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a group of dedicated traders in 1990 came together to form a forum to address the challenges faced by traders. Over the years, CAIT has evolved into the apex body representing India's trading community at a national level.
"The CAIT headquarters, Vyapar Bhawan in New Delhi, serves as the national hub, well-equipped to serve the needs of traders across the country."
Role of CAIT
CAIT has played an instrumental role in several key areas of trade and policy reform in India, addressing issues that affect the trading community directly:
- Replacement of Sales Tax with the Value Added Tax (VAT) system
- Process of implementing Goods & Services Tax (GST) in India
- Establishment of the Direct Tax Code in the country
- Formulation of rules for the Carriage by Road Act
- Handling of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail trade
- Systematic development of internal trade
- Formulation of the Master Plan in Delhi
- Sealing drive of business establishments by local authorities
- Submission of memorandums to Union and State Governments to simplify laws, rules, and procedures on various trade-related topics
